Phones are absolute shit for MP3 playback, because they use software decoding instead of a dedicated hardware decoder chip, like dedicated mp3 players do.
Not sure about the N-Gage though

The Original ngadge uses dedicated hardware chip.
All other Series 60 devices, including the N-Gage QD, rely on software decoding.
There not great for movies etc considering it uses .rm or .3gp format I may be wrong tho.

its 30gb and has the long life battery - seriously I charge it maybe once a month and use it for an hour or two a day.
Awesome sound, nice metal case, decent color screen, plays video, flac, ogg, about any file format you care to throw at it. Has an FM radio, alarm, eq etc etc etc
Best of all since it doesnt work with ID3 databases, you simply drag and drop your music to it (or off it) like you would any removable hard drive. No software is needed.

rockbox is an alternative firmware, especially created by hackers and designers from outside of any official company. they make new firmware for plenty of players, and give them new features, better use of resources, etc.
my iriver h10 was pretty shit. it had a colour screen but the biggest use of it was the lame photo viewer on the stock firmware. with rockbox, i can now watch video and play doom (w00t). i know that not many people would actually want to watch video on a screen that size, but it just goes to show what can be done with a previously near-obsolete player.
also, it allows you to change themes, fonts, while playing screens, and various plugins for it. rockbox is awesome.
even an ipod can become geek friendly, as long as itunes is told to fuck off and some decent features are built in for those who know how to use them.
admittedly, they don't do all players. but, if you want more out of your player, give it a try.
EDIT: by 'resources' i'm including an improved battery life. mine has a slightly worse battery life, but that's because they only managed to crack it a month or two ago.

You can if the firmware hasnt been developed yet lol mine does everything I need tho by default so im happy.
Its good to rely on company built firmware rather than thirdparty if I remebered rightly rockbox used a duel boot system which is nice I cant find the source code I have atm tho.
Offcourse rockbox is good but a initial release can take sometime to get out and develop and to a degree its wise to be careful with such "thirdparty software". I dunno what security is implemented but id imagine there would be alot of reverse engeenering involved.
As for the battery I imagine you mean normal use such as listenting to music etc as watching movies should run it down hard.
Personaly in my firmware win media portable I turned off all the special effects, themes, custom settings, transition sounds and so on and use the simple stuff to keep the battery happy.

I now own a 60Gb 5G iPod. I would not have bought it except for Rockbox.
Battery life of iPods? The 5G 60 Gb is rated for 20 hours playback.
If you use Rockbox you can just load the music on and put it where you want.
Sound quality? It has less background hiss than my H320 (which had great sound) and Rockbox allows you to set the 5 band equaliser that is on the Wolfson chip. The Wolfson is the DAC (digital to analogue converter, it converts the digital sound files to audio
If you look at the credits of Rockbox, you will see my name. It was last but I think it has moved up a tad now
So I am on you DAP Kiwi!!!
