Hey, im thinking about building a computer, and everybody keeps telling me its easier than lego. i've read up a lot on it etc...
out of curiousity are there any like tafe/adult ed course's which "teach" you how to do it. sorry if im exaggerating but i'd rather go into something confident than with the ability to make a big mistake. also i saw the post about http://www.nearbynerd.com.au/nerds would one of these people maybe "build it infront of you"? or would someone on here show me for a price?

i have watched a lot about building. it seems rather easy, but things like thermalepaste, installing custom fans, linking the small wires from the psu, installing custom cpu cooler, and proper wire managment ( i would like to know how to build a neat pc ) seem a tad complicated.

p.s im "thinking" about building pc atm havn't finalised what i want to buy etc
another thought, do computer store's allow you to "volunteer" and build pc's e.g taspc? lol. oh and why im so interested in help, is the first time i had to do something to my computer, i put in a 8800 gt and blew up my cpu ( i had a 400 watt psu loL ) also didnt connect the 6pin connector lol

p.s.s the other reason i would like help is, im very keen on overclocking the system, but want to do it properly

If you want it done right & not blow something up definitely get someone like Willis to help.
There are so many silly little things that can get broken, shorted out & just go wrong.
Just make sure when you order the parts that they are 100% compatible.
The manufacturer will list what ram, Cpu etc is compatible with their mobo.
Get that wrong & you will have shiny new parts you can't use.

Yes and no. Manufacturers tend to list what they have tested in their product. If you open the manual and read the compatibilty list for say, RAM, it may only list a few certain brands, like Corsair. I don't think there is any G.Skill RAM mentioned in the manual for my mobo and it works fine.

You will nearly always be fine if the sockets match up, DDR3, 1366, PCI-E etc. etc :)

If you ever get stuck, or are uncertain about something you can follow what Fabio said but if you do this you could miss out on something you want. So it's better just to ask :)

I agree but I have had ram compatibility issues before so just make sure.
G/Skill list some of the mobo's their ram is compatible with so check their website if you go with them. :)

All above advice is good.

If your worried about building a $1000 pc with little experience, try buying a $10 clunker from a tip shop.

You can practice pulling the clunker apart and putting it together, most tipshop boxes are similar to modern pcs. Furthermore, if you kill the thing up it only cost you $10!

calm down boys lelel

i5 750 2.66ghz $247
EVGA P55 Micro Motherboard $239
antec 902 $169
G.Skill 2x2gb (4gb 1600 mhz)$168
ocz fatal1ty 700w sli $165
5770 ( already own ) $209
1tb hdd $109
Samsung Optical drive $45
Xigmatek HDT- red scorpion edition $59 ( cpu cooler )

$1410
not sure what shipping is gunna be, hopefully under a 100

this is what im thinking about atm ( all price's from pccasegear.com ) the motherboard might be a tad overkill but i really want a decent one with overclock capability. Not too sure about what CPU cooler to get, still thinking about what to go with. is 1600 mhz ram required or is 1333 fine?

p.s the ocz fatal1ty 700w sli PSU, i can get a different brand if somebody recommends.

That's a good solid build. I would change the PSU to a Corsiar HX-650 or a TX/HX-750 model and if you are wanting a great, cheap CPU cooler grab a Xigmatek Dark Knight.

:) Cool. Antec, XFX and Seasonic are also good to look into. The Antec TruePower line is awesome and Seasonic are the OEM of the Corsair and XFX powersupplies, so go figure

XFX PSU is an awesome power supply and has great reviews for their first attempt at a PSU
Stay away from any Fatal1ty shit, this guy slaps his brand on anything and it usually doubles the price for no reason.

no need to change from a stock cooler, save some money and just use what comes in the box. unless your gonna OC but i doubt it considering this is your first build.

Building a PC is easy, just take your time, read the manuals or get a friend to guide you, over time you will pull this puppy down a few times again, to change cases or swap out parts or do some cable management, so in turn you will learn.

just a few tips.

Make sure mobo mounting screws are in the right place
Dont over tighten screws
Build on a flat surface standing on something non static (just better to be sure) lino FTW
Install CPU, cooler and RAM before mounting mobo in case :)

need help... phone a friend :)

besides that you have a nice selection of components :)

This is mainly due to Seasonic being the OEM.

Not always the case. Just because his name is on it doesn’t make it shit and a lot of his stuff, the Creative gear anyway, is usually priced decent. His Creative headsets are fine and his Creative sound cards are fine, hardware wise (Creative drivers are another issue that have nothing to do with Fatal1ty).
Although having said that, I wouldn’t buy that OCZ Fatal1ty PSU.

He very well might be considering overclocking, or learning to regardless of what build it is. Even if he isn’t you can argue that PC components running cooler during their use will last longer and if he’s going for aesthetics with his build, stock CPU coolers look far from good.

My 2 cents.

ye the reason for me wanting to buy a $239 mobo, instead of a $120 one, is so i can overclock. i've been reading that its quite easy to get a i5 750 from 2.66ghz to 3.6/3.8 ghz stable with an aftermarket cooler. i would be more than happy with a OC from 2.66, to 3.00 or 3.2. and even if that's completely unnecessary the capability of doing it in the future, its only an extra 30-90 bucks for a decent cooler?

you don't have to buy an expensive mobo to overclock, and i have overclocked a core 2 duo on stock cooling from 2.4 to 3.0 stable on a mobo that cost me $150 :)

overclocking for some people is fun, but since i fix computers all day, when i come home a machine that works and runs for days is what i am after so i leave my main pc alone, if i was to OC something it wouldn't be my main computer.

just incase you cook something you then have to source a new part, in the meantime loosing out on serious pwnage :P

but realy when it comes down to it, it's your money, your time and your choice, go with what you like and have fun :)

if you have been reading that much and you gonna dive into OC'in your first PC then i dont think you need help building one. you should be able to do that while sleeping.
hope to see it at the next LAN :)
